In the world of handcrafted log homes, most logs are either left round or sawn flat to take on a rectangular shape. But in this home, crafted by Pioneer Log Homes (the handcrafting division of Rocky Mountain Log Homes), the logs are two-faced.

Looking like a round-log home from the outside, the home features the sophisticated look of flat-hewn logs inside. The transition from the flat to the round log profile in the corners was accommodated by saddle-notching, a handcrafting process that allows the logs to interlock tightly.

Rocky Mountain Log Homes received three national homebuilding awards in the 2012 Jerry Rouleau Awards for excellence in marketing and home design, presented by the Building Systems Councils and the Log Homes Council.

The Hamilton-based log home builder received the excellence in home design award for log homes larger than 4,000 square feet. Its winning entry was the Tunken Log Home, which has a total living area of 6,582 square feet.

When Judy and Richard Steed of Fort Worth, Texas, began planning their retirement home, they wanted a place where they could retreat from the busyness of their normal routine. While visiting their daughter’s home in Montana several years ago, the couple discovered The Stock Farm Club, a private, golf-based community nestled in the Bitterroot Valley. They loved it and decided to purchase a lot in the Mountain Home sites, tucked in the foothills of the Sapphire Mountains. “We wanted to be up in the pine trees,” Judy explains.
