High Among the Pines

Log Cabin Homes
When Judy and Richard Steed of Fort Worth, Texas, began planning their retirement home, they wanted a place where they could retreat from the busyness of their normal routine. While visiting their daughter’s home in Montana several years ago, the couple discovered The Stock Farm Club, a private, golf-based community nestled in the Bitterroot Valley. They loved it and decided to purchase a lot in the Mountain Home sites, tucked in the foothills of the Sapphire Mountains. “We wanted to be up in the pine trees,” Judy explains.

Every Room with a View

Log Cabin Homes

When Jim and Nancy Schueler of Hamilton, Montana, set out to build their fourth log home, they wanted a design that would take full advantage of the 250-acre property’s breathtaking views of the magnificent Bitterroot Mountain Range. The result was a sprawling home situated on a knob in the Bitterroot Valley, with expansive windows in every room to offer panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Okay, how many living rooms in the Hamptons, and I’m talking the whole Hamptons, have stucco ceilings with swirls so thick you can practically gash your hand on them, and how many log homes are there to begin with?” ask Jill Rappaport, the longtime entertainment correspondent for NBC’s Today Show (her popular segment is called, in a play on her name, “The Rapp Report”).  Back in 1995, encouraged by her best friend, Christie Brinkley, she bit the bullet and bought a big-timber log cabin on close to six acres.  There she could have a haven for the horse she was boarding in

Dan and Susan Metzger work together and play together, so it was only natural that they would design their vacation home near Big Sky, Montana, to accommodate their lifestyle as well as the executive retreats Dan hosts as a business consultant. Susan, who recruits salespeople in high technology, shares Dan’s passion for outdoor sports such as skiing, fly fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling.

Run for the Money

Log Home Living

It’s a crisp, clear day in Hamilton, Montana, and Matt Guzik is doing what he does every day: training for another race to raise funds for his favorite charity.  Some people might say the general manager of Stock Farm, and exclusive gated community designed with a Western flair, is obsessed because he ran 13 marathons in 13 months for charities.  Passionate is more accurate description for “Marathon Matt,” whose enthusiasm runs through all aspects of his life, including the Bitterroot Valley and his hybrid log home.
